New Year's Mass Schedule Hello! Happy Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God! We are still enjoying this beautiful Octave of Christmas! What a joy it is to start the new year with honoring the Mother of God. This is a significant Solemnity,
because it is honoring Mary and one of her four Marian Dogmas. What is a Dogma? Well, I’m glad you asked. A dogma is a truth pertaining to faith or morals, revealed by God, transmitted from the Apostles in the Scriptures or by
tradition, and proposed by the Church for the acceptance of the faithful. Mary has four dogmas that are particular to her, the Immaculate Conception, her Perpetual Virginity, Mother of God, and her Assumption.
Why is this particular dogma important? Because it is imperative that we believe that Mary is truly the Mother of God. She is not a foster parent, like St. Joseph, she is the Mother of God. She is the Theotokos, the God-bearer. She carried Christ in her womb for 9 months, and then gave birth to Him. She was there for Christ’s entire life, from the
beginning with the Annunciation to the end, at the Crucifixion. She was the ever constant, ever present reality to Our Lord. She never abandoned Him, nor will she abandon us. She is the mother of all, the Mother of the Church. Do not be afraid to lean on her love and wisdom, to lean on her for support, because Our Lord did that throughout His life. The next time you have the opportunity to look at a Nativity scene, take a moment to reflect on the role Mary played in Christ’s life. Take a moment to reflect and pray on the role of the mother, even in the life of God Himself. Beccah Frulla
In the encyclical
(1974) Pope Paul VI states: "This celebration, assigned to January 1 in conformity with the ancient liturgy of the city of Rome, is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salvation. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the 'holy Mother . . . through whom we were found worthy . . . to receive the Author of life.' It is likewise a fitting occasion for renewed adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels, and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace. For this reason . . . we have instituted the World Day of Peace, an observance that is gaining increasing support and is already bringing forth fruits of peace in the hearts of many"
