PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS
The council is the representative body of the people of Saints Mary & Joseph Parish, and all Catholics in the greater Salem community. Council members meet with the Pastor to enhance and expand the decision-making process for pastoral planning and goal setting, improving pastoral services, and evaluating all programs and service effectiveness.
Three positions are available on our Pastoral Council this May. These three positions are for 3 years. Nomination forms will be in the pews this weekend, and you may nominate anyone, including yourself, whom you feel would be a good candidate for the council. The weekend of April 27-28, 2019 is the deadline for all nominations. The lay membership of the Pastoral Council is open to any confirmed parishioner in good standing, 18 years of age or older, registered with the parish, and actively practicing the Roman Catholic faith. All nominees will be contacted and invited to participate in a discernment process.
If the nominated individual accepts, he/she must attend the first discernment session, to be held on Thursday, May 2nd, at 7:15 PM in the family room at St. Joseph’s Church. This session will include an explanation of what it means to be a member of the Pastoral Council, and how the council contributes to the parish vision and mission. It will help nominees decide whether they wish to attend the second and final meeting for discernment on Thursday, May 9th at 7:15 PM, also in the family room at St. Joseph’s Church.
Attendance at BOTH sessions is MANDATORY for all nominees. Part of the discernment process involves getting to know each other, and as such, all clergy and all current council members must also attend BOTH discernment sessions in order to be eligible to vote for the above three nominated positions.
A council member should have the following qualities: regular availability for monthly meetings; a strong willingness to actively participate not only at meetings but also to be visible and available at mass celebrations; an understanding that we are trying to build a faithful and active community of disciples; a willingness to work with a group of people who have the good of the parish in mind, and to support the Pastor and the parish in spreading the message of peace, love, joy, spirituality, hospitality, and discipleship.
We humbly ask all parishioners to meditate on the gifts that God has given you and your neighbor, and how these talents may be used to help build the kingdom of God in our community. Please fold and tear at the line below, and place your nomination in the collection basket (or give to an usher/greeter) by April 28th. Additional forms will be available in the pews for the next two weekends. May God Bless You!
