Yes, even though there is no more racetrack, the official name for the Mexico Mission ministry remains the same: Racetrack Ministry. Lee Alphen is responsible for both the ministry and administrative portions. She recently reported that Mexico is pretty much shut down. It is especially hard on people in the outlying areas since all they really had as social opportunities were church and school. There are about 80 families that receive help with groceries every few months. Otherwise, all they have to eat is corn ground into tortillas, without meat or beans! The mission team awarded about 20 scholarships in January to a combination of high school and college students. In addition, they financed celebrations for the New Year, Epiphany, Easter, Feast of John the Baptist, and Christmas. This Easter was limited to providing groceries due to social distancing. If no one from the local parish offers the Mass, this group pays. They also pay for all of the items needed for the mass like the candles, wine, communion wafers, bibles, etc. Lee and her team are grateful for all of the support from the parish.
