In Confirmation, the one receiving the anointing and laying on of hands receives a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit so that they can be true and faithful in their living out their discipleship.
Restored Order of the Sacraments of Initiation
Our diocese is in the process of restoring the sacrament of Confirmation to its original place in the initiation sequence: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
In celebrating Confirmation later, it may appear that Confirmation is the “crowning sacrament”, when, in actuality, the “crowning sacrament” is the Eucharist. Baptism and Confirmation prepare us for the Eucharist. By Baptism we have been given access to the family of the People of God. In Confirmation we have been sealed in that relationship. Now, we have the right to sit at the “family table” and share in the Body and Blood of Jesus. The new practice will be First Reconciliation in grade 2, and then in grade 3 Confirmation and Eucharist will be celebrated within the same Liturgy.
For more details, refer to the Faith Formation page.
Catholics outside of high school may participate in diocesan confirmation classes and celebrate the sacrament at the Cathedral.
