Many people have asked about the New Hampshire Catholic Appeal (NHCA) campaign, its origins, and its impact on Catholic Charities of NH (CCNH). In 2019, the Diocese conducted a study of collections, fundraising programs and the financial needs of ministries and locations across the state. The clergy were concerned about the number of times and ways the parishioners were solicited throughout the year. As a group, the majority of clergy were in favor of moving many collections, “asks” and programs into one fundraising endeavor, such as an annual Catholic ministries appeal. So, this year around Easter, the NH Catholic Appeal was piloted in half of the parishes in the diocese.
Traditionally, each year, parishes have conducted an Appeal to support Catholic Charities. The Bishop has included Catholic Charities in the New Hampshire Catholic Appeal, and so moving forward we will not conduct a separate parish appeal for this important ministry. Catholic Charities of NH is a vital service to our state, and it responds to those in need with programs that heal, comfort, and empower. Catholic Charities will receive a significant portion of the NHCA proceeds to continue and expand their charitable ministries – the charitable mission of the Church will be an essential part of this appeal and will not suffer unnecessary revenue loss. Approximately 96-97% of revenue collected from the Appeal will go towards ministry, education, and parishes. 3-4% of revenue will be spent on administering the NHCA. No funds will go towards other diocesan administration, the bishop’s office, or any clergy abuse settlements/litigation. Expenses will be accounted for in the publication of an annual report for the NHCA. This report will include an accounting of how all dollars raised were used. All registered, active parishioners will receive this report. The expenses will include the cost of producing and mailing the informa-tional materials for the Appeal for 41 parishes and over 40,000 households in 2022. This pilot year (consisting of the Phase 1 parishes) allows for the mindful rollout of this important collaborative endeavor. Phase II of the Appeal will be in 2023 in which 88 parishes will be included in the NHCA. At that time, the NHCA and Catholic Charities of NH Appeal (CCNH) will become one. CCNH revenue will not be affected as their ministries are essential to the whole Church!
