Palm Sunday Reflection

We don’t often get to experience what Jesus did over the span of a few days and we should really thank God for that. During His entry into Jerusalem, the people shout “Hosanna” and lay palm branches before him. Then as He is being accused falsely before a court, possibly some of the same people shout “Crucify him, crucify him!” For us the experience might be a nice compliment from the boss at work and then, on our way home, a mistake while we’re driving brings the loud horns of anger and disapproval. Can you imagine the conflicting feelings Jesus must have been contending with as he saw His disciples abandon him and other followers call for his execution? Jesus was fully human as well as fully divine so He must have been deeply tempted to strike back at those who were being “two-faced,” to hurt them in some way as they had Him. But the power of God, the Holy Spirit, enabled Him to act not on those feelings but rather out of the deep love that God has for humanity. Being followers of Christ, we too can live in this power and not be tossed this way and that by the waves of our unpredictable feelings. We too can choose to love in a life-changing way even those who try to get us to deny the Truth and join the crowd that has surrendered to the path of mediocrity. Deacon David Costello
